Globalization is a catch-phrase, a sound-bite which captures our imagination and which describes any number of contemporary social, economic, and political processes. The communications, transportation, and information revolutions have compressed our notions of space, time, and community. Transnational social movements, multinational corporations, and the rise of regional blocs have challenged our assumptions about the nation-state. International capital flows indicate a truly global web of finance and production.

In this course, we will explore this set of issues keeping the key question of “where is the power” as our pole star through an examination of case studies. Course readings and discussions will investigate topics such as: identity and nationalism, global commodity chains, transnational social movements, trade and international finance, state power, and the issue of change. Students will develop their communication and analytical skills through different kinds of assignments. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify the main global actors, critique the dominant modes of thinking about globalization, analyze the forces at play in the current system, and speculate as to the prospects for change in the future.

This courses uses the text "Globalization: A Vert Short Introduction" by Manfred B. Steger.
